SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie (2 OT) with San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon at The Cougar Den.
The draw moves the Cougars to 2-5-4 overall and 2-3-2 in CCAA play. SFSU is now 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-3 in conference competition.
Sydney Hernandez took a free kick from 35 yards out in the 51
st minute, forcing SFSU keeper Karin Nordin to push it off the cross bar. It took a bounce before
Meghan Randig headed it back into the top-right corner of the net.
It marked the sophomore's second goal of the season.
CSUSM carried the play the rest of the way and looked confident in gaining three conference points, but a defensive miscue allowed the Gators to equalize.
SFSU played a long ball from the half line to the top of the box and CSUSM goalkeeper
Allie Jara went out to catch it. However, the ball squirted between her arms and Kimber Lohman was there to knock it into an open goal.
Jenna Hernandez took a solid rip early in the first overtime period from the top of the box, but Nordin was able to push it past the post to keep the Gators alive.
Then, with moments left in the second OT period, it was Jara's turn to come to the rescue, as she handled a rocket from Danielle Vidal from just above the box.
The Cougars have one home match remaining this Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay. Five Cougar seniors will be honored prior to the match in a special Senior Day celebration.
