SAN FRANCISCO – There is a youth movement taking place in the Cal State San Marcos women's and men's cross country teams as freshmen
Rachel Brady and
Steven Terris led the squads to top five team finishes at the San Francisco State Invitational on Friday afternoon. The women's team finished third overall and the men's team placed fifth in the Cougars' first time racing in the event.
Brady (22:15.1) finished 12th overall and the women's squad registered 93 points (12-14-20-22-25) to place third, 30 points behind 12th-ranked Cal Baptist in the 6K event. CCAA rival Chico State, ranked fifth in the nation, took top honors with 41 points.
"I'm very proud of Rachel, she ran an excellent race," said head coach
Steve Scott.
Natalie Rodriguez (22:20.1) and
Salena Gallardo (22:35.6) joined Brady in the top-25, finishing 14th
and 24th, respectively.
Bailey Smith (22:36.7) finished 26th overall and
Mandy Solorio (22:42.7) placed 29th overall to round out the Cougar scoring.
"The women looked much better this week as opposed to last week," Scott said. "They were much stronger against tougher competition on a difficult course."
On the men's side, Terris set a new personal-best of 25:07.6 to finish ninth overall, his second top 10 result of the season. The Cougars scored 115 points (9-13-21-33-39) to finish fifth in the 8K race, just four points behind Southern Oregon. Second-ranked Chico State placed five runners in the top-eight to win with 23 points. No. 22 Cal Baptist finished second with 82 points and host SF State placed third with 111 points.
Also in the top 25 for the men's squad were
Trent Warren (25:16.2) and
Caesar Castillo (25:31.7) who finished 15th and 25th, respectively.
Michael Waltrip (26:02.3) placed 46th overall and
Justin Washington (26:15.5) finished 59th overall to complete the scoring for the Cougars.
"Steven, Trent and Caesar were very solid and at the front of the pack most of the race," Scott said. "Michael has been a solid (number) four for us, we just need a fifth man to step up and run with him."
The Cougars will play host for their next competition in the Cougar Challenge at Mangrum Field on Sunday, Oct. 18. The general public is invited to race against the Cougars. For information on how to sign up, click
