CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team opened the scoring, but could not hold off Chico State in a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in the Cougars' California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season finale at University Soccer Field.
Louie Farfan registered his team-leading sixth score of the year to put the Cougars ahead in the 12
th minute, but Omar Nuno equalized before Frankie Palmer netted the eventual game-winner in the 36
th minute for the Wildcats.
The Cougars finish their first season in the CCAA with a 4-7-1 conference mark. Overall, CSUSM is 6-8-2 ahead of its regular-season finale on Nov. 7 against Embry-Riddle (Fla.).
The win improves Chico State to 6-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the CCAA.
"It's a really hard game to process at the moment because we're pretty disappointed in the result. I thought for long stretches and the majority of the game we were the better team," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "Our guys played relatively well to win, but we just didn't score the goals. We dominated every statistical category except the one that counts."
The Cougars outshot the Wildcats 14-6 and put eight of their shots on-frame. CSUSM won the corner kick battle, 5-1, as well.
Farfan put three of his four shots on target and
Zach Olow placed two of three on frame.
Zach Sheppard made three saves in between the pipes for CSUSM.
The loss guarantees CSUSM just its third losing season since the program was established in 2006, and first since 2012.
Nov. 7's match vs. ERAU will be Senior Day for the Cougars. The CSUSM seniors will be honored for their service to the program prior to the contest.
