UCSD Edges CSUSM 1-0 in First Conference Clash Between Local Schools

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team fell 1-0 to UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Wednesday evening at Triton Soccer Stadium.

The Cougars drop to 6-7-2 overall and 4-6-1 in CCAA play. The win keeps UCSD's postseason hopes alive and improves the Tritons' record to 6-5-5 overall, 5-3-3 CCAA.

Eric Young headed in his first goal of the season in the 76th minute off a cross from Zachary Lagotta for the game winner.

"The difference was that they were much better than us in the second half. I thought we were the better team in the first half, but nothing materialized from it," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "We're pretty disappointed, but we have to pick up and look forward to Sunday at Chico for another challenge. Hopefully we'll be able to play a full 90 minutes and end our conference schedule on a positive note."

CSUSM came out on the front foot, outshooting the Tritons 9-2 in the first half. However, the teams both had six shots in the second half and UCSD won the corner battle, 4-0.

The meeting was the first conference game between the CCAA's San Diego schools. UCSD leads the all-time series now, 4-1.

The Cougars will end their conference schedule on Sunday at Chico State.
