POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team fell in straight sets at Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Friday night at Kellogg Arena. The final scores were 25-21, 25-23 and 28-26.
The Broncos out-dug CSUSM 77-58, which gave CPP more attack opportunities to answer for their 25 hitting errors.
The Cougars fall to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in conference action. Cal Poly Pomona improves to 9-6, 5-2 CCAA.
Leading CSUSM was senior
Taylor DeGraaf who posted seven kills while picking up a team-best 18 digs. Junior
Brooke Butler added seven kills and freshman

After dropping the first two sets, the Cougars came out of intermission with a new energy. CSUSM took a quick 4-0 lead capped by a Butler solo block. CPP answered with its own four-point run. At 7-7, the Broncos pulled away after scoring six unanswered points. The Cougars would not go quiet into the night, fighting back and eventually knotting the game at 23-23. CSUSM had set point at 24-23 following a kill by sophomore
Ashley Kaylor. Two consecutive points gave the advantage to CPP. Kaylor put down a pair of kills to fight off two Bronco match points but back-to-back kills by Deanna Blaine clinched the set and match for CPP.
Blaine led the Bronco offense with 17 kills and Kristen Hamlin added 12 kills to finish the night with a .348 clip.
The Cougars will now travel over 300 miles north to face Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
