No. 15 CSUSM Bounces Back, Shuts Out Undefeated Biola

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A couple of lineup adjustments paid dividends right away for the Cougars as the No. 15 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team topped Biola, 2-0, on Saturday at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

Paulina Good's move from central midfielder to striker proved to be the most significant change for CSUSM, as the junior scored a pair of goals in the second half to help snap a two-match skid for the Cougars.

CSUSM improves to 3-2-1 with the win, while Biola slips to 6-1 with its first loss.

"It's good to get back on track. We're a hardworking team and we hadn't displayed it recently," said CSUSM head coach Bobby Renneisen. "But we came out and showed our true spirit, which helped us generate more success. I think we can keep it going with a bit more consistency."

Coming off of a couple of shutout losses to a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) opponents, CSUSM adjusted its lineup to include Karly Dunning at holding midfielder and Good up top; Morgan Simmons remained in the left back starting position and Courtney McLeish moved to right mid for the second game in a row.

Chances were few and far between early on, as Brianne Searl's curling corner kick to the back post was headed high by Good, and a long-range shot from Dunning was pushed over the bar by BU keeper Briana Williams.

The Cougars would get it right in the second half, however, as Searl once again found Good on a corner kick in the 49th minute. Good rose to meet the driven ball at the back of the six, and headed it into the top of the net for her first goal of the season.

20 minutes later, in the 69th, a collision between two players inside the box resulted in a penalty kick in favor for the Cougars. Good confidently stepped up to take the spot kick and placed it over the keeper's left shoulder.

Amanda Sears helped preserve the shutout by tipping Shea Davis' long range attempt just over the cross bar in the 86th minute.

CSUSM will now turn around to play Rocky Mountain (Mont.) Sunday at 2 p.m. on the CSUSM Multipurpose Field. For those that can't make it to the match, live video and play-by-play will be available here
