It’s All Good: No. 15 CSUSM Edges Rocky Mountain, 2-1

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Coming off of a two-goal performance in yesterday's victory over previously undefeated Biola, Paulina Good broke a 1-1 tie in the 51st minute with her third goal of the weekend, as the No. 15 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team prevailed over visiting Rocky Mountain, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

The Cougars improve to 4-2-1 overall with the victory, while Rocky Mountain drops to 5-3. CSUSM, who came into the weekend with two consecutive shutout losses, combined for four goals in its two victories this weekend.

"I think our performance today was really solid. We certainly grew this weekend as far as embracing the type of work rate that we need to be successful," said CSUSM head coach Bobby Renneisen. "It was really needed, quite honestly, coming off two losses against really good teams. We needed to come into this weekend playing at home and regain that belief by just playing hard and playing the way we know how to play."

CSUSM went into the break tied at 1-1, but did not waste any time retaking the lead for good. Brianne Searl, who scored the Cougars' first goal, played a high-arching long ball over the top. The pass forced the goalkeeper to come off her line to attempt to clear it from the edge of her box.

However, Good beat her to the spot and one-timed a chip on frame. The bouncing ball was barely touched off the line by a RMC defender, but it stayed on the goal line as the defender fell into the net. Good outsprinted the goalkeeper to the ball and buried it into the right side.

The game was not nearly as close as the score sheet would indicate, as CSUSM outshot the Bears, 10-1, and won 14 corners compared with zero for RMC.

Searl made it 1-0 in the 15th minute in unlikely fashion. Taking a free kick from inside the center circle, Searl drove the ball towards the top of the six. The RMC goalkeeper came out to punch it away, but could not get a clean hand to it, and it slipped through her fingertips and into the net for Searl's first score of the season.

RMC would get the goal back in the 31st minute, as the Bears played short off a free kick from the center of the field. CSUSM attempted to draw the forwards offside, but Sam Houle was able to stay on as Therese Hagbyhn played it into the box. Houle, all alone, played it back across the six to a waiting Gabi Heflin who placed it into the back of the net.

The goal was exceptionally against the run of play, as RMC was unable to generate another shot the rest of the way.

CSUSM has a week off before facing Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) next Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Multipurpose Field at 1 p.m.
