SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sullivan Tobin's left-footed strike provided the difference in the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team's 1-0 victory over No. 24 Biola on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.
The victory marks the first time that CSUSM has ever beaten ranked opponents in consecutive matches. The Cougars defeated No. 10 Concordia (Calif.) on Wednesday, and will have another chance to take down a top-25 team when No. 23 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) comes to town tomorrow (Sunday) at 4 p.m.
The Cougars move their record to 6-2 overall, while the Eagles drop to 3-2-1.
"It's a really good result for us; they're top 25 and always a very good team. What I'm most pleased about is the amount of work our guys put into getting this result," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "We're getting there. Our block of eight from the midfield to the back was really solid and we played well in transition."
CSUSM was a tad fortunate to go into the half tied at 0-0, as BU's True Tamplin squandered an obvious 2-on-1 scoring opportunity by cracking a shot off the near post.
Nine minutes into the second half, the Cougars were in control of the run of play and finally found their spot. After swinging the ball from right to left,
Parker Radford played
Eric Lopez inside before Lopez faced up his defender and slid the ball to his right to
Angel Mora.
Mora took a dribble and slotted it out to his right over to Tobin. He cut inside, took a dribble on the top of the 18, and ripped a low shot that tucked nicely inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
Although it would be the only goal on the scoresheet, both teams were not without their opportunities.
Moments after Tobin's score,
Diego Fontes played a 50-yard long-ball to
Thor English on the left flank. English, in a full sprint, brought down the ball with the outside of his right foot and placed it perfectly in stride inside the left corner of the box. 1-on-1 with the keeper and with his defender completely beaten, English's rip missed just high of the bar.
CSUSM nearly rued its missed opportunity, as a careless turnover in the back caused a 3-on-1 break for the Eagles. However, John Hanscom popped his wide-open shot over the net to keep Biola off the board.
Alex Jaziri found space on the right side before chipping a ball for
Eric Lopez at the penalty spot, but Lopez's scissor kick went high and wide.
CSUSM's final gasp for air came 10 minutes from time when
Erik Mueller attempted to clear a ball off the back line. He slid in to meet the ball, but it ricocheted off the bottom of his cleat into the right post. Luckily, the ball bounced straight out into the waiting arms of
Zach Sheppard, who was able to secure his third shutout of the year.
