SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Dustin Scibilia scored twice,
Sullivan Tobin added a goal and an assist, and the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team scored four times in the second half en route to a 5-2 victory over San Diego Christian in the Cougars' season opener Wednesday at Mangrum Soccer Field.
Neil Keith put CSUSM on its back foot with a goal in the 8
th minute, but Tobin equalized 20 minutes later before the Cougars scored three goals in a seven-minute span to put the game out of reach midway through the second stanza.
SDCC drops to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 1-0-0.
"All five of them were great goals. Anytime you score five goals it's positive," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "It was disappointing the way we approached the game in the first half. We allowed them to set the tone and personality of the game early on. But, it was good to have to deal with that early on. Then we equalized and at half we came out with a different approach."
Minutes after Tobin hit the crossbar while trying to chip the SDCC goalkeeper, he got on the end of a loose ball before firing into the left corner to make it 1-1 in the 28
th minute.
Fitness seemed to be a bit of an issue for SDCC early in the second half, and CSUSM took advantage of its time in the Hawks' half of the field.
Evan Myers rocketed a shot off the right post before
Bryan Morrison and
Luka Stevanovic were denied goals from point-blank range by Froylan Onofre. The Cougars won nine corner kicks in the second stanza and ended up scoring off three of them.
CSUSM went ahead in the 67th, as Sciblia pounded home a header into the top-netting off
Diego Fontes' left-footed corner kick. Scibilia celebrated with a front flip in front of the Cougar faithful.
Seven minutes later, Tobin played a low corner kick across the six that
Scott Rice put away uncontested to make it 3-1.
Eric Lopez put CSUSM up three on the Cougars' next trip into the SDCC half. He picked his head up from 30 yards out before ripping a shot into the side-netting.
The Hawks gained extra life when Francisco Ramirez deflected in Moises Parada's free kick in the 77
th, but Sciblia put an exclamation point on the game by forcing in a loose ball off
Jacob Stolmeier's corner. Another goal, another front flip.
Zach Sheppard made three saves in goal for CSUSM
"We should not have conceded two goals, that's a problem. We'll get it right and refocus. We've got to have a different approach, a better attention to detail, and a better work ethic when we face Vanguard next week."
CSUSM travels to face the Lions on Wednesday, September 3. The team's next home match is Monday, September 8 against Southern Oregon.
