New Sheriff in TownWell, he's actually not so new. After eight seasons under the watch of longtime coach
Ron Pulvers, first-year head coach
Bobby Renneisen will guide the women's soccer team. Although it is his inaugural season at the helm, Renneisen is hardly a new face; he served as Pulvers' lead assistant for the previous eight years and has been here since the program was established in 2006. CSUSM has gone 84-42-24 (.640) with Renneisen on the sidelines.
They're BackCSUSM appears well-equipped to repeat as Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) champions, as seven regular starters from 2013 return to this year's lineup. The Cougars have their top-two points leaders back for their junior seasons,
Paulina Good (15 points – 6 G, 3 A) and
Natalie Lara (9 points - 4 G, 1 A), as well as two-year starting goalkeeper,
Amanda Sears (.64 GAA in 2013).
Brianne Searl and
Nicole Luna will have one final campaign trolling the back line, and
Courtney Kay, who started all 18 of her appearances a year ago, returns to the midfield.
New Place, New Face(s)The Cougars lost a handful of stalwarts off their 2013 squad – including NAIA All-American
Kaleigh Dodson and all-conference first teamer
Dani Porter – but have regrouped with a number of players expected to contribute right away. Among them: sophomore defender
Brooke Carter, a transfer from NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield; freshman forward
Shantae Elam, a strong player for Irvine High School and Slammers FC; and
Yeya MIllan, who redshirted in 2013.
The PollCSUSM debuted at
No. 15 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Top 25 Poll, it was announced Tuesday. The Cougars received 305 points in the poll, sliding one position from its final No. 14 listing in 2013. CSUSM has been ranked in the top-20 of the preseason coaches' poll for six consecutive seasons since 2009.
Eastern Oregon PreviewAll-time record vs. EOU: 0-0
CSUSM and EOU will be introduced to each other on Sunday, as each takes part in its first contest of the season. The Mountaineers are coming off a 9-5-1 campaign and a 5-4 record in the Cascade Collegiate Conference; EOU finished sixth in the CCC to earn its second ever trip to the CCC Tournament and their second winning season.
