GENEVA, Ohio— The Cal State San Marcos women's track and field team had two athletes compete Friday at Day 2 of the NAIA Indoor National Championships, sending one athlete to Saturday's finals.
60m hurdler Brittany entered the event with the 15
th fastest time coming in, but rose to the occasion and earned herself a spot in the finals with a personal best mark of 8.81 in qualifying.
The junior from Helix High School in San Diego placed third in her heat and eighth overall, grabbing the final spot in Saturday's final from Indiana Tech's Andrea Ford, who had the fifth fastest time entering the competition.
Cougar senior
Heidi Swanson also competed in the 1 Mile Run, finishing 22
nd overall after gutting out a 1200m leg in the
women's distance medley on Thursday despite battling the flu.
Hollie will join 3000m runners
Kelly Thompson and
Kate Bouvatte in finals competition Saturday, though she is the only one guaranteed to be an NAIA All-American. With the top eight in each event earning the prestigious honors and only eight athletes competing in Saturday's 60m hurdles final, Hollie has secured scoring team points for CSUSM and the All-American recognition.
Thompson and Bouvatte are among 14 athletes competing in the 3000m final, and enter the event with the fastest and third fastest times, respectively. Thompson, who has been battling injuries and hasn't ran over the past two weeks, will look off to cap off her outstanding CSUSM career with her first career national championship, while Bouvatte is also a threat to compete up front.
Hollie will be the first to compete Saturday at 12:45pm local, or 9:45am PST. Thompson and Bouvatte will race not long after at 2:05pm, or 11:05am PST.
Live Video of the championships can be purchased through the NAIA for a one-time payment of $5.95.
