SAN DIEGO, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track and field teams had a solid afternoon Saturday at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational held at the Point Loma Nazarene University track. CSUSM's women's team finished third out of 20 teams with 220 points, while the Cougar men placed fourth out of 23 teams with 182 points.
The Cougars had two event winners Saturday, with
Brianna Gibas playing a large role in each. The senior from Oceanside won the 400m with a season best time of 58.11— the fourth fastest time in the NAIA this season. She was also one of only two athletes to break the minute barrier.
Gibas also helped the 4x400m relay win by a comfortable margin, as the Cougars were the only team under 4:00, running 3:58.45.
Other top performers on the women's side were hurdlers
Brittany Hollie and
Jessica Toliver, who each placed third in their respective events. Hollie ran 14.53 in the 100H, just .05 behind her mark last week that still stands as second best in the NAIA. Toliver ran a career best 1:06.35 in the 400H, which currently ranks eighth nationally.
The women's 4x100m relay also finish third with a time of 48.95 and
Jashell Smith recorded a second place finish in the discus with a mark of 36.97m.
On the men's side, the hurdlers were among the standouts once again as
Kyle Johnson placed second overall with a time of 15.15 in the 110H. His mark ranks fifth in the NAIA, while 400H
Damon Moore improved upon his personal best to run 54.11, hitting the NAIA "B" standard. Moore ranks third in the NAIA after two weeks of the outdoor season.
Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays also finished second in their respective events, running 43.00 and 3:19.20.
High Jumper
Greg Talley (6' 9") and javelin thrower
Maurice Strickland (160' 8") each recorded third place finishes, while
Michael Anastasia (Triple Jump-42' 6.75") and
Patrick Holstrom (Pole Vault-13' 9.25") both placed fourth. Talley's leap was enough to hit the NAIA "A" standard, securing an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships in May. He also ranks second in the nation currently.
CSUSM will compete next at the Aztec Invitational held at San Diego State on March 28-29.
