The Cougars will be playing their second NAIA Game of the Week this season. In the Cougars' first edition, then-No. 4 CSUSM took down then-No. 5 Concordia (Calif.), 84-81, on Jan. 10, 2014 in Irvine. CSUSM led by as many as 14 in the second half, but CUI pulled within two with 18 seconds remaining. However,
Malcolm Lemmons hit a pair of key free throws that iced the game.
Kings of GSAC's Jungle
Vanguard recently clinched its first outright regular-season Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title since 1988-89. VU is just 3-3 over its last six games, but that is after a 13-game winning streak between Dec. 7 and Feb. 4. CSUSM topped VU
80-64 in the teams' only other meeting this season on Nov. 23, 2013.
De'End Parker scored 28 points and corralled 10 rebounds in the game.Â
St. Katherine Preview
CSUSM didn't spend much time as the newest team in North County San Diego. St. Katherine College, located southwest of CSUSM in Encinitas, is playing its first full season as a program in 2013-14 and Saturday's exhibition will be the first time the two programs have met. St. Kath is 6-21 overall and 3-8 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Dante Miller is the Firebirds' leading scorer at 13.7 points per game. Dale Austin leads the team in rebounding (8.7 RPG).
Senior Night
Prior to Saturday night's contest at MiraCosta, nine Cougar seniors will be honored for their service to the men's basketball program:
Bryan Emanuel,
Bobby Macias,
Quincy Lawson,
Tyree Murray,
Jason Johnson,
Malcolm Lemmons,
De'End Parker,
Zack Zaragoza and
Adam Eakles.
