16 Straight
The Cougars haven't lost since Dec. 7. CSUSM has won by an average of 23.8 points per game during the run. Five players are averaging double figures during the streak, including
De'End Parker (15.9),
Malcolm Lemmons (15.9),
Jason Johnson (14.5),
Bobby Macias (12.7) and
Zack Zaragoza (10.8). The Cougars are shooting 49.1 percent as a team and the offense has been distributed evenly in each win. During the streak, CSUSM has scored 747 points in the first half and 757 in the second half.
When Life Gives You Lemmons…
Lemmons, a senior guard, has been a major catalyst for the Cougars over the last few contests. In four games last week, Lemmons averaged a team-best 17.8 PPG while corralling 5.8 RPG. He shot 50 percent from the field (23-0f-46), 30 percent from 3-point range (6-of-20) and 86 percent from the line (19-of-22). He's scored 15 or more points in eight of the Cougars' last 10 games. He scored 21 in the Cougars' last game on Feb. 8 and scored a season-high 26 against La Sierra on Jan. 30. Â He also leads the Cougars with four double-doubles this year.
The Week That Was
CSUSM went 4-0 last week, beating UC Merced 120-72 on Tuesday before winning three games on back-to-back-to-back nights at the Northern New Mexico College Classic. CSUSM topped NNMC 91-66 on Feb. 6 before taking NNMC down against 79-69 on Feb. 7. The Cougars' capped the weekend off with a 102-73 victory over Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Feb. 8.
Quincy Lawson put a monster performance together against JWU, finishing with season-highs of 21 points and 13 boards. Macias averaged 14.5 points per game last week, while Parker pitched in with 13.0.
Zaragoza Golden from Long Range
The Cougars' sharpshooter seemed to carry the Cougars on his back during Feb. 7's 10-point victory over NNMC. Zaragoza went 7-of-10 from behind the arc, matching
Jacob Ranger for the single-game school record. The senior small forward needs 32 more 3-pointers to match
Jose Rivera's record of 92, set in 2012-13. Zaragoza is shooting 46.9 percent from 3-point range, which is the highest percentage for any Cougar with over 20 career 3-pointers made.
