Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUSM Leads for Majority, but Falls 72-62 at Nevada

RENO, Nev.  – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team led for over half the game, but eventually fell 72-62 to University of Nevada-Reno in an exhibition on Saturday night at Lawlor Events Center.

The Cougars took a seven-point lead into halftime and led by three with 5:35 remaining, but the Wolfpack held CSUSM scoreless for the final 4:12 and closed with an 11-0 run.

Dayton Boddie played all 40 minutes for the Cougars and led the team with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Akachi Okugo pitched in 14 while Blake Nash had 13. Julian Camper contributed seven points and a team-high seven boards.

The contest marked CSUSM's second exhibition against an NCAA Division I opponent this week after facing Cal on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.

The teams traded punches out of the gate, but a 3-pointer from Tyson Kygar and back-to-back layups from Boddie and Nash handed CSUSM a 24-16 lead halfway through the first half.

It remained a two-possession game the rest of the half, as the Wolfpack could not get closer than four. Jumpers from Okugo and Boddie late in the frame gave CSUSM a 36-29 advantage at the break.

The Cougars couldn't make their lead any bigger in the second stanza, and eventually Nevada caught the Cougars on a jumper from Elijah Foster that made it 47-46 Wolfpack at the 11:08 mark. It was Nevada's first lead in over 23 minutes of play.

CSUSM regained the lead, as Camper made a contested layup before Nash found Declan Daly for a tough lay-in.

Marqueze Coleman, who scored a game-high 28 points, drained a 3-pointer at the 5:08 mark that brought the Wolfpack even, 60-60. He hit 1-of-2 free throws his next time down the floor to give Nevada back the lead.

Boddie answered with a quick jumper at the other end that gave CSUSM a 62-61 lead, but it would be the final time CSUSM would score.

Coleman was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three. Then, he hit a fastbreak 3-pointer with 2:51 to play that made it 67-62.

Nash and Kygar had 3-pointers to cut the deficit back to one possession, but neither could find their mark.

CSUSM returns to action Tuesday at home against Pomona-Pitzer. Tipoff at MiraCosta College is slated for 7:30 p.m.
