Tastes Like Chicken: Cougars Make Easy Work of Sagehens

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The No. 3 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team made easy work of Pomona-Pitzer, 87-60, on Tuesday night at MiraCosta College.

Julian Camper poured in a game-high 20 points, Akachi Okugo added 18 on 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and the Cougars improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Pomona-Pitzer, an NCAA Division III institution, played the contest as an exhibition and remains 0-0.

Camper led a group of Cougar bigs that caused fits for the Sagehens all night. Camper was 7-of-9 from the floor and Declan Daly went 5-of-5 for 10 points. Daly has yet to miss a shot during an official contest this season (9-of-9). In addition, CSUSM outrebounded P-P 38-24.

The Sagehens led by as many as five early in the game, but the Cougars took the lead for good at the 13:14 mark as Okugo found Daly inside for one of Okugo's game-high five assists.

A 13-1 run was capped off by a tough left-handed layup from Camper to make it 31-17.

The teams traded baskets, but Okugo hit a three to put CSUSM up 17 before P-P's Gibson Farone-Collins answered with one his own at the end of the half. The Cougars went into the break up by 14, 42-28.

A 12-0 run from the Cougars gave them a 30-point lead with 9:07 left. Dayton Boddie broke away for a fast-break layup, Wade Collie made a contested basket at the rim and Tyson Kygar hit his third 3-pointer of the night to end the run.

Jacob Andersson's lay-in gave CSUSM its biggest lead of the night, 82-45, with 4:19 to play.

Junior point guard Larry McMorris came in late and hit his first shot as a CSUSM player, a deep 3-pointer from the right elbow at the 3:02 mark.

All nine players that saw time on the floor scored for CSUSM.

Okugo was making his first start of the season, filling in for injured game one starter Blake Nash.

The Cougars will head to Las Vegas to compete in the Tip-Off Classic hosted by Concordia (Calif.). CSUSM takes on No. 22 Rocky Mountain on Friday before clashing with No. 18 Lindenwood-Belleville on Saturday.
