CSUSM Sets New Program Record for Wins in a Season, Takes Down Point Loma 4-1

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team scored three goals in a seven-minute span early in the first half on its way to a 4-1 victory over visiting Point Loma on Tuesday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

The Cougars improve to 13-3 overall with the victory and set a new program record for wins in a single season. The previous record had been 12 wins, achieved in 2006 and 2010.

In addition, the Cougars have won seven matches consecutively for the first time since Aug. 25, 2006-Sept. 16, 2006, matching the longest streak in program history.

"I like our chances moving forward. We won 13 games for the first time and I think our guys have taken ownership of setting the new benchmark and giving the teams that follow them something to strive for," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "Now, we have to refocus, try and win the conference, and get a bid to nationals. We've got a lot of goals ahead of us that we still want to accomplish. This one is sweet, we'll enjoy it, and then we'll look forward to next week."

The goalkeepers were the stars early on for both squads. Landon Sherwood made a diving save on Matt Rose's attempt to the front post before Avrin Yakou got his toe to Bryson Gaitan's breakaway attempt.

Thor English broke the seal for the Cougars in the 20th minute. After Evan Myers played a long ball up the right sideline, English beat a pair of defenders to it before turning towards goal. Yakou came out to cut off the angle, but English was able to curl it around him and inside the right post.

Just over a minute later, Eric Lopez and Sullivan Tobin combined above the left side of the area to free substitute Scott Rice inside the box. Rice took a touch before bending a left-footed shot past the reach of Yakou. It marked Rice's first goal since the Cougars' opening game on Aug. 27.

The Cougars put up their third in the 27th. Lopez drew a penalty kick when he was tripped inside the box by PLNU left back Tyler Allen.  Tobin, who came in with five goals over his last six matches, converted the spot kick to make it 3-0.

Tobin's 10th goal this season, it ties him with Brandon Zuniga (2009) and Bradley Seidenglanz (2006) for the most goals in a single season by a CSUSM player.

Yuki Hata ended all doubt in the 69th minute, finishing off another clever feed from Lopez for his second goal of the year.

PLNU got one back with a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.

The Cougars have outscored their opponents 16-1 over its last three games.

Next up for CSUSM is the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship, Nov. 14-15, in Clinton, Iowa.

CSUSM is currently tied for No. 2 in the A.I.I. Group Poll. The Cougars learned they missed out on the latest NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll released Tuesday by just three points.
