CSUSM Falls Victim to Golden Goal in A.I.I. Semifinals

CLINTON, Iowa – No. 2-seed Georgia Gwinnett scored with 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to eliminate the No. 3-seed Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team, 2-1, from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship semifinals on Friday night at Saints Field.

Ibrahima Sissoko pounced on a loose ball inside the six and pounded it into the top of the net just moments from penalty kicks.

The Cougars drop to 13-4 and will wait and see if they have done enough this season to warrant an at-large berth to the NAIA Opening Round. GGC (11-2-2) moves on to Saturday's A.I.I. title match to face No. 4-seed University of Houston-Victoria, which beat No. 1-seed Ashford in penalties in the earlier semifinal.

CSUSM carried the majority of play and outshot GGC 17-14, but key saves from Grizzly goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe and a couple of lax moments at the back proved to be the difference.

Sharpe's five saves in the first half kept the Cougars off the board and GGC took a 1-0 lead into the break against the run of play as the CSUSM was caught off guard clearing its own box from a corner kick.

CSUSM tied it back up in the 72nd minute. This time, the Cougars were able to clear their own area before playing it forward for Lopez. Lopez beat his defender in behind and was one-on-one with Sharpe.

The GGC keeper came out to meet Lopez at the top of the area, but Lopez chipped it over a diving Sharpe and inside the left post to pull CSUSM even at 1-1.

It appeared as though CSUSM would net the game winner just minutes from the end of regulation, but it'd be called back for offside. Evan Myers played a long ball to the back post for Yuki Hata, who headed it back to the middle. Dustin Scibilia flicked the re-direct into the net, but he or Scott Rice were in an offside position when Hata's pass was played.

Both teams were without too dangerous of an opportunity in the first extra frame. However, in the second stanza, Sullivan Tobin received a cross while all alone inside the right of the area. He took a touch and had a clear shot at goal, but Sharpe got his leg to it to kick the ball away.

The teams looked content to go penalties, but GGC caused a fit for the Cougar backline deep in their own end. The ball bounced to an unmarked Sissoko, who put it away one-time for the win.

Landon Sherwood also registered seven saves in the contest, which was his first loss of the season (7-1-0).
