Lopez Breaks Scoring Record in Senior Day Blowout

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Eric Lopez became CSUSM's all-time scoring leader with a pair of goals in the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team's 5-0 victory over University of Antelope Valley on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

On a day in which Lopez and 10 other seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program, Lopez scored twice and added an assist, breaking the CSUSM career records for points and goals scored, previously held by Bradley Seidenglanz (2006-10). Lopez now has 54 points and 20 goals, besting Seidenglanz's tally of 49 and 19, respectively.

The Cougars secured their sixth straight victory and improved their record to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) play. CSUSM is riding the second longest winning streak in program history and needs one more victory Tuesday against Point Loma to match the record of seven set in 2006.

CSUSM also matched the program record for wins (2006, 2010) in a season with at least one regular season contest and the A.I.I. Tournament remaining.

"Senior Day is always filled with some mixed emotions, and it is especially true with this group," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "They're all quality guys that we're seeing on to, hopefully, better things in their life. I'm happy for them because their commitment and dedication to the program has been outstanding."

Sullivan Tobin scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 13th minute. He took on his defender one-on-one above the left side of the area before cutting the ball back to right and firing a low shot inside the left post. Tobin has scored in four straight matches and seven of the last eight.

Four minutes later, Tobin's long throw in ended up on the boot of Lopez, who flicked it to Thor English. English hit it one time from the PK spot and left the UAV goalkeeper with no opportunity to stop it.

The assist on English's goal gave Lopez the all-time points record at CSUSM.

Lopez tied the scoring record in the 52nd minute by firing home a low shot after UAV misplayed a clearance. He broke the record in the 65th, finding the right top corner on a one-time shot off a feed from Tobin.

Senior midfielder Diego Fontes finally got the monkey off his back less than two minutes later, sneaking a left-footed shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

The Cougars outshot UAV 26-1 and won nine corner kicks compared with one for the Pioneers.

CSUSM ended the match with all 11 of its seniors on the pitch together: Lopez, Tobin, Fontes, Erik Mueller, Mason Grimes, Evan Myers, Anthony Fischer, Chris Higley, Scott Rice, Alex Jaziri and Angel Mora. Mueller, normally the Cougar center back, took over for Landon Sherwood in goal, and preserved Sherwood's shutout for the final 6:16.

UAV drops to 2-13 and 0-1 in A.I.I. play.

"12-3, we're pleased with that. It's a reflection of these guys' hard work and the effort they're putting in. The results are coming," said Pulvers. "We know we have a really difficult one on Tuesday against Point Loma and hopefully we can get to win number 13, then 14, then 15 and so on."

CSUSM is at home for one final time this season on Tuesday, Nov. 4 against Point Loma. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
