ATHERTON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team traded goals with Menlo College, but it was the Cougars who would get the last laugh in their 3-2 victory over the Oaks on Friday afternoon.
Erik Mueller broke a 2-2 stalemate in the 79
th minute with a diving header off a corner kick from
Angel Mora. It was Mueller's first goal of the season and Mora's seventh assist of the year, which ties CSUSM's single-season record.
The Cougars improve to 7-3 overall while the Oaks drop to 3-5-2.
Eric Lopez made it 1-0 in the 20
th minute, but Sebastian Bosch evened it for Menlo 10 minutes later.
The tie didn't last for long, as
Sullivan Tobin scored for the third consecutive game to put CSUSM up 2-1 less than a minute later.
Menlo would score midway through the second half, but Mueller sealed the deal with his first goal since 2011.
"We had some really quality moments today, but there were some times that we didn't play to our capabilities," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "But I'm pleased with our team's resilience and ability to go out and get the win. Now it's time to focus on UC Santa Cruz, who is a very good team."
The Cougars travel to face the Banana Slugs on Sunday at 1 PM.
