SANTA CRUZ, Calif. –The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team won for the fourth time in its last five games, 1-0 over UC Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon at UCSC's Lower East Field.
Ryan Kisgen made UCSC pay the ultimate price in the 33
rd minute, scoring the game-winner after the Cougars forced a turnover in the Banana Slug end.
CSUSM improves to 8-3 overall with the victory, while UCSC drops to 7-4-1.
"It was a really good win for us because of the way we played, our work rate was outstanding," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "Our defense was top notch. We were on them all game and limited them in a lot of ways."
The Cougars outshot the Slugs, 10-2, and CSUSM goalkeeper
Landon Sherwood didn't have to make a save.
CSUSM went 2-0 on its road trip to Northern California, including Friday's thrilling 3-2 win at Menlo College.
Kisgen notched his first career goal after
Angel Mora stole it from a Slug player in the UCSC end. He beat a defender before playing it out wide to
Eric Lopez. Lopez slid it to Kisgen, who slotted it into the far corner from 12 yards out.
The assist from Mora gave the senior midfielder eight for this season, which breaks Alex Brunsell's previous record of seven, set in 2012. Mora has contributed seven assists in his last five matches, with at least one in each of those contests.
CSUSM has five home matches remaining in the regular season, starting with Thursday, Oct. 9's matchup with La Sierra.
