In the original story posted on Oct. 25, it was stated that Angel Mora had two assists. Upon review of the game film, it was determined that Mora should have been credited with a secondary assist on the Cougars' fourth goal of the game, which gave him three for the match and 14 on the season. The story below reflects those changes.
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team scored four goals in the first 30 minutes against a shorthanded Johnson & Wales (Colo.) squad and increased its winning streak to five with a 7-0 victory in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference play on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.
JWU (6-9-2) starting goalkeeper Trevor Shepherd was dealt a straight red card three minutes into the match for cutting off an obvious CSUSM scoring opportunity by handling a ball outside the box. The Cougars were really never in danger from that point on.
Sullivan Tobin and
Dustin Scibilia scored twice,
Angel Mora had three assists,
Eric Lopez contributed a goal with a pair of assists, and
Bryan Morrison netted his first career goal as a Cougar. CSUSM matches its win total from a season ago while improving to 11-3 overall, 1-0 in A.I.I. play.
In addition, the seven-goal victory tied for the program record for margin of victory. In September 2006, CSUSM beat San Diego Christian 7-0.
Lopez broke through in the early moments of the game and had a clear opportunity to score. He touched the ball to his right about 22 yards out and Shepherd, who was sprinting out to cut off the angle, dove left and pushed it away with his palm.
The referee did not hesitate with the red and the Wildcats were faced with the challenge of playing a man down for the next 87 minutes. Leading goalscorer Ben Flannery Bartlett was inserted as the goalie due to the unavailability of the regular backup.
Three minutes later, Lopez touched a pass to Mora, who fed Tobin inside the left edge of the box. Tobin took a moment before burying a left-footer into the top-left corner.
Mora then found
Louie Farfan off a corner kick in the 26
th minute. Farfan headed the back-post cross to Barlett's right to make it 2-0.
Mora's trio of assists puts him in the lead for most career assists in CSUSM history with 15. Lopez is just two behind with 13. Mora has at least one assist in eight straight games and has tallied 13 over that same timespan.
Tobin added his second in the 29
th, finishing off a rebound after Lopez's shot was saved. Tobin has scored in three consecutive matches and leads the team with eight goals on the season.
Morrison made it 4-0 moments after the half-hour mark. Mora played a low cross off a deadball into the area, which Lopez controlled into the path of Morrison. Morrison pounded it into the net for his first goal.
Finally, Lopez would get a goal of his own in the 59
th. His defensive effort forced a turnover deep in the Wildcat end. He took a strong touch forward and was all alone with Bartlett in goal with 30 yards in front of him. After a series of dribbles, Lopez curled a shot inside the right post to make it 5-0.
JWU lost another player in the 66
th minute when Tyler Cleverdon was sent off for making contact with the referee.
A nice feed from
Diego Fontes allowed Scibilia to net his first goal since tallying two in the Cougars' home opener in the 71
st.
Fontes was unfortunate not to score himself after finding the crossbar off a dead ball.
For good measure, Scibilia added another in the 80
th minute. He stole a pass in JWU's end and fired a shot inside the far post from the left-corner of the box.
CSUSM has two more games remaining in the regular season, both at home against University of Antelope Valley (Saturday, Nov. 1, 1 p.m.) and Point Loma (Tuesday, Nov. 4, 3:30 p.m.). Nine Cougar seniors will be honored for their years of service to the men's soccer program prior to Saturday's match against UAV.
