Cougars Knock, but San Diego Christian Won't Let 'Em In

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 15 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against San Diego Christian Friday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

The unbeaten run is tied for the second-longest streak in CSUSM program history. CSUSM moves to 8-2-3. SDCC is now 5-7-2 overall.

The Cougars outshot the Hawks 11-6 on the day and earned seven corners compared with two for SDCC, but the Hawks were able to keep the Cougars off the board despite a handful of dangerous opportunities late in the match.

CSUSM's best chance to net the game-winner came with a minute remaining in the first overtime period. Monica Aguilera had a go from the top of the box, but it was tipped over the bar by SDCC keeper Katherine Koury and out for a corner.

Brianne Searl played it to the back post and it dropped to the floor, igniting a melee for the ball. The Cougars were able to get off a couple strikes, but each was blocked by a Hawk shin guard. Paulina Good had a clean look from a sharp angle, but her strike was cleared off the line at the back post.

Then, in the second OT, Good's pressure on a Hawk defender resulted in a turnover at the top of the SDCC box. Good put the defender on her back before trying a left-footed floater. It appeared true, but it missed the top bar by inches.

In the first half, Good headed a ball off the crossbar on another cross from Searl.

Amanda Sears did well to preserve a shutout of her own, collecting a pair of saves, none bigger than her stop on Elya Jasper's try late in the second half. Jasper, who had just been inserted as a substitute, cracked a shot from the left edge of the area to the far corner. Sears backpedaled before diving to her left and punching it out of play.

In the second overtime, SDCC forward Vivian Oray played a dangerous cross to the penalty spot. Katherine Day had her defender beat to the inside, but Sears came out to deflect the cross at the right moment.

The Cougars will host a conference match against University of Antelope Valley tomorrow, Saturday, at noon. Nine Cougar seniors will be honored prior to the match as a part of Senior Day. Senior Day will start at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The Cougar men take on Johnson & Wales (Colo.) following the women's match.
