SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 15 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team honored its seniors with a 2-0 victory over University of Antelope Valley in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference play on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.
Brianne Searl, one of the nine fourth-year players recognized before the match, recorded both assists on goals from
Paulina Good and
Megan Pfrunder.
The Cougars improve 9-2-3 and 1-0 in A.I.I. competition, while UAV drops to 5-7-3 and 0-1 A.I.I. CSUSM remains unbeaten in its last nine contests, which is the second-longest such streak in program history, two away from the program record of 11.
A half hour in, Searl played one of her patented corner kicks from the right side. Good met the low ball at the PK spot and volleyed it in the top of the net without it touching the ground. It marked Good's second goal in her last three games.
Moments from halftime, UAV had a clean look at goal from the right side, but Searl was in the right place at the right time and she cleared it off the line.
Amy Young had a go from inside the six, but it was slid out of danger by UAV goalkeeper Thania Huerta.
After 60 minutes of pretty even play, the Cougars began to force their will on UAV. Pfrunder, a substitute, eventually put the Pioneers out of commission.
Searl played a ball from the midfield stripe that bounced at the top of UAV's arc. Pfrunder beat her defender to the inside before floating a shot over an out-of-position Huerta.
Searl's pair of assists gives her seven on the season. Good and Pfrunder have five and three goals this season, respectively.
Amanda Sears and
Kimi Mendenhall combined for the shutout.
Searl, Mendenhall, Sears, Young,
Amy Alber,
Courtney Kay,
Kelly Skvarna,
Monica Aguilera and
Nicole Luna were honored for their years of serves to the women's soccer team prior to the contest.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season Tuesday, November 4 against Point Loma.
