CSUSM Downs Bethesda for Fourth Consecutive Win

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team held off pesky Bethesda, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field, increasing its winning streak to four games in the process.

The Cougars led by two goals for most of the contest, but Bethesda twice narrowed the lead to a goal and nearly tied it up midway through the second half. However, Luka Stevanovic's long-range effort from 45 yards out in the 74th minute beat the BUC goalkeeper and iced the victory for CSUSM.

CSUSM improves to 10-3 overall, marking the second consecutive season in which the Cougars have recorded double-digit wins. BUC drops to 7-7.

Angel Mora added two more assists, upping his season tally to 11. He's gone seven consecutive games with at least one assist and has registered 10 within that same timespan.

Mora hit the crossbar 16 minutes in and Sullivan Tobin pounded home the rebound to put CSUSM up 1-0. Tobin has also been on a hot streak lately, having tallied five goals in his last six matches. He now has a team-high six goals on the season.

Bethesda gifted the Cougars their second goal, as BUC keeper Oscar Gomez cleared it off the back of his defender and into his own net in the 23rd.

The Flames cut the lead in half less than five minutes later on a goal from Daniel Carrillo that seemed to be the result of a defensive lapse.

CSUSM made it 3-1 a little more than 10 minutes into the second frame. Mora picked off a back pass in the Flames' half and played a wide-open Tobin on the left flank. One on one with the keeper, Tobin attempted to chip him, but his effort went off the crossbar. It bounced back to Mora and Mora tried his luck.

A sliding defender got his foot on it, but the ball bounced straight into the path of a BUC defender facing his own net. It ricocheted off his shin and into the back of the net for another own goal.

It appeared as though CSUSM would cruise the rest of the way, but Mingyu Wee stole the ball of the toe of Mason Grimes and finished a one-on-one opportunity with CSUSM keeper Drew Desser.

A melee ensued in the Cougar goal after the play, and Grimes and Wee were ejected as a result of the altercation.

BUC nearly tied it, but Desser came through with a diving save on Cesar Pompa-Guerrero's effort before parrying Youngsoo Shin's bicycle kick out of danger.

Stevanovic returned to the match on the ensuing substitution and almost immediately made an impact. Once again, Mora stole the ball in the BUC half and played it forward to Stevanovic. Stevanovic turned, picked his head up and hit it, fooling an out-of-position Gomez.

CSUSM returns to action next Saturday, October 25 against Johnson & Wales (Colo.).
