SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics is committed to giving back to the community and that is exactly what the Cougar volleyball team did on Sunday afternoon, volunteering at the 29th Annual Foster Family Picnic in San Diego.
"Giving back and helping others is a very important part of our program," said head coach
Andrea Leonard. "I am very proud of our young ladies in how they engaged themselves with so many foster children; by caring, sharing, encouraging and taking the time to help others.
"We realize the importance of encouraging others and giving help to someone who may need a little extra love and attention."
The event consisted of more than 200 kids between the ages of 2-12 looking to be adopted.
Sophomore
Morgan Willis' mother, Debra Willis, is the Director of Child Welfare Service for San Diego County.
"My mom and I have been helping out at the picnic for the last five years," Willis said. "It was great to be able to include the Cougar Volleyball team this year. I am excited that our team is going to be making this an annual activity."
The student-athletes participated in games like tug-a-war, beanbag toss and sack races with the youth. They also made bracelets and rings, as well as special Halloween decorations, in the arts and crafts tent.
"We had so much fun doing the sack races, it truly brought smiles to the kids' faces," said senior
Alyssa Hubbard. "We also made some really pretty bracelets that the kids were able to take with them."
The Cougars are back on the court Tuesday, Oct. 14, hosting San Diego Christian at Pacific Ridge School. First serve is 7 p.m.
