No. 3 CSUSM Looks to Become First in Nation to 20 Wins

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos, sporting its highest ranking ever, hosts Simpson on Saturday night at MiraCosta College, looking to become the first team in the nation to 20 wins.

A Record, a Milestone and a Streak
The Cougars currently hold the most wins in the nation with 19 victories in their first 20 games. CSUSM will be the first team in the nation to reach 20 wins if the Cougars beat Simpson. The Cougars' 10 game winning streak is currently the second longest in the nation, one behind No. 6 Freed-Hardman's 12 (12-0).

NAIA Game of the Week Recap
Then-No. 4 CSUSM held off then-No. 5 Concordia (Calif.), 84-81, in the NAIA DI Game of the Week last Friday night in Irvine. It was the Cougars' second win over the Eagles this year and first-ever on the road. Jason Johnson led the way with 23 points while Malcolm Lemmons pitched in with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Lemmons also added three key free throws to ice the game down the stretch. CUI dropped to No. 10 in this week's top 25, while CSUSM moved up a slot to No. 3.

10 in a Row
The Cougars have not dropped a game since a 67-82 loss to Hope International in Fullerton on Dec. 7. Their current streak is the second longest in program history behind the 14 in a row the team won between Dec. 18, 2012 and Feb. 16, 2013. During the streak, the Cougars have won by an average of 23 points while outscoring opponents 92.6 to 69.6 in the process. CSUSM has won eight of the games by double digits and the team is shooting 49.2 percent from the floor.

G – Malcolm Lemmons: Recorded fourth double-double of season at CUI (1/10)
G – De'End Parker: Currently ranks fifth in the NAIA in total scoring (374) and total assists (87).
F – Quincy Lawson: Ranks sixth in the NAIA with 32 total blocks. Shooting 63% over last 10 games.
F – Adam Eakles: Averaged 6.3 rebounds while shooting 62% over last 10 games.

Probable Reserves:
G – Bobby Macias:
Averaging 10.6 points and 2.9 assists in eight games since returning to lineup on Dec. 20.
F – Zack Zaragoza: Shooting 53.3 percent from behind the arc over his last seven games (22-of-41).
F – Khalil Murphy: Pulled down 10 rebounds in just 14 minutes of work vs. Fresno Pacific (1/4).

Simpson (5-10)
Despite winning just a third of the games they've played thus far, the Red Hawks enter Saturday's contest riding a three-game winning streak after opening conference play with consecutive wins over William Jessup, Menlo and UC Merced.  Dalton Thacker leads SU with 12 PPG, while Ian Corella averages 11.4.
