Box Score 2 MENLO, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team lost yet another five-set heartbreaker in a loss to tournament host Menlo, but closed out the Menlo Tournament Saturday with a straight set sweep of Mills College. The Cougars fell 14-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-10, 13-15 to the Oaks, but bounced back nicely with its commanding 25-10, 25-12, 25-18 win over the Cyclones.
CSUSM and Menlo battled back and forth all afternoon, swapping sets before falling by two points in the final set. In all, both teams ended the match with the same exact number of points, scoring 99 points apiece.

Taylor DeGraaf accounted for 29 of the points for San Marcos, tallying 25 kills, three block assists, and a service ace. She hit .373 on the match, and also chipped in a team best 20 digs, giving her three games this season with at least 22 kills and 20 digs.
Erin Talafus had a strong game in the middle, picking up a game-high five blocks (two solo, three assist) and 13 kills with a .524 hitting percentage.
The Cougars are now 0-3 in five set matches this season, dropping all three games by just the minimum two points. Three of CSUSM's four losses have been in five set thrillers, with the only other loss coming Friday in a four set showdown against Oklahoma Baptist. The Cougars have not been swept yet in 15 games this season.
On the other end, the Cougars picked up their eighth sweep of the season in their dominant victory over Mills College. CSUSM used a balanced attack and had 10 athletes record at least two kills on the match.
Sami Castillo set a career best with 20 digs Saturday evening.
With the win and loss, the Cougars now stand at 11-4 on the season. CSUSM also improved to 9-3 on neutral courts, and dropped to 2-1 on the road.
The Cougars will play their first home games of the year Monday and Tuesday as they host Hope International and defending NAIA National Champion Concordia (Calif.). Start time for both matches is 7 pm at Escondido High School. Posters will be given out to the first 100 fans in attendance.
