CSUSM Bests Soka University in Physical Battle

Cougars fight past Eagles for 2-0 road win

Box Score

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The No. 17 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team shutout a physical Soka University squad, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Lion's Den.

Paulina Good and Kaleigh Dodson tallied second half goals for CSUSM, helping the Cougars to a 2-0 record on the young season.

The Lions were dealt a pair of red cards in the second half and were forced to finish the game with nine players.

"It was an extraordinarily physical game," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "But we have players who are extremely athletic and can perform under pressure, and that's what helped us win today."

After playing to zeroes after the first 45 minutes, Good made it 1-0 in the 49th minute by driving in a low ball off a set piece from the right side. After Soka went down to 10 players in the 68th minute, Dodson hit a volley into the upper corner four minutes later to provide the insurance.

CSUSM travels to Las Vegas next week to play Great Falls and Rocky Mountain on Sept. 14 and 15, respectively.
