CSUSM Hangs In with CSU Bakersfield Before Falling, 82-71

Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team led NCAA Division I's CSU Bakersfield with 10 minutes left in the second half, but the Roadrunners rallied with a late 12-2 run to take Saturday night's exhibition, 82-71, at Icardo Arena.

CSUSM (20-4) trailed by 14 in the first half, but responded with a 20-11 run to pull within 39-36 at the break. Jose Rivera opened the half with a 3-pointer to tie the game and the Cougars eventually took their first lead on a 3-pointer from AJ Gasporra, 50-49, with 15:11 left.

Quincy Lawson dunked off a feed from Gasporra to make the lead three on the Cougars' next possession. After a pair of free throws by the 'Runners brought CSUB (9-15) within one, Lawson threw down another jam off Gasporra's dish to make it 54-51 with 12:30 left.

Stephon Carter answered with a jumper before making three consecutive free throws to hand CSUB a two-point lead, but Gasporra responded with a floater in the paint to make it 56-56. Gasporra then drained a 3-pointer to give CSUSM a 60-58 edge at the 10:23 mark, but it would be the last time the Cougars held the lead.

Neither team scored over a four-minute span until Brandon Barnes handed the Roadrunners a 63-60 lead with a 3-pointer. Hakeem Washington converted a pair of free throws to bring CSUSM back within one, but CSUB rallied for12 of the game's next 14 points to open up an eight-point advantage with 3:55 left.

Danny Redmon's two free throws made it a two-possession game with 3:40 remaining. However, the Roadrunners put together an 8-2 stretch to make the lead double digits.

Redmon led all Cougars with 16 points, while Rivera and Lawson added 11 and 10, respectively. Gasporra and Jacob Ranger finished with nine points apiece.

Carter led all scorers with 23 points, breaking CSUB's all-time scoring record in the process. Carter finished the game with 1,531 in his career.

CSUSM resumes its regular schedule on Thursday, February 14 at No. 6 Westmont. The Cougars topped the Warriors 66-52 earlier this season on Dec. 19.
