No. 12 CSUSM Soars to 9-0 in El Cajon

Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. – The No. 12 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team improved to 9-0 with an 87-77 victory over San Diego Christian on Wednesday night at Ryan Athletic Center.

The Cougars have the second-most wins in the NAIA and are one of seven undefeated teams left in the country.

De'End Parker scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and the Cougars did not trail in the final 34 minutes of the game.

Malcolm Lemmons recorded his first double-double as a Cougar with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Johnson had 16 points to go along with eight assists, while Quincy Lawson tallied 13 points.

An 8-0 run by the Cougars gave them a 17-10 lead at the 12:44 mark. SDCC snuck back within one, but CSUSM responded with a 10-1 run to take their first double-digit lead with 6:21 remaining.

SDCC pulled within six at the break, 40-34, despite being outshot 48.5% to 37.5% in the opening frame. Lemmons led all scorers with 12.

The Eagles pulled within four out of the intermission, but it'd be as close as they'd get the rest of the way.

Johnson found Parker on a backdoor cut for an alley oop dunk that put CSUSM up seven at the 13:42 mark.  A layup by Lawson, 3-pointer from Parker and a jumper by Johnson gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the game, 62-50, two and a half minutes later.

However, the Hawks pulled within five with 3:06 left and had an opportunity to get within a possession for the first time in nearly 20 minutes. But, the Cougars forced a long three pointer before Lawson drew a foul and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Cougars up 77-69.

SDCC once again pulled within five with 1:41 to play. On the ensuing trip down the floor, the Cougars ran down the clock before Lawson drew a foul and made two free throws.

The Hawks came up empty on their next possessions. They fouled, and Lemmons hit both his free shots to make the Cougar lead nine with 59 seconds left.

Parker went 8-of-8 from the stripe in the second half and 10-of-10 for the game.

CSUSM heads to Fullerton to face Hope International on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.

The Cougars return home on Dec. 17 and 18 for the CSUSM Holiday Classic at MiraCosta College. CSUSM will play Trinity Western on the 17th at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Westminster on the 18th at 7:30 p.m.
