No. 8 CSUSM Blasts Westminster, Improves to 11-1

Entire rotation contributes in victory over Griffins

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Jason Johnson delivered a season-high 23 points as the No. 8 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team buried Westminster College, 77-55, on Wednesday evening at MiraCosta College in the final game of the CSUSM Holiday Classic.

Johnson, who has finished in double digits in 10 of the Cougars' first 12 games, went 5-of-8 from behind the arc and dished out four assists.

CSUSM improves to 11-1 overall, while Westminster drops to 7-6.

Malcolm Lemmons finished with 16 points and four steals. De'End Parker had 13 points, in addition to seven rebounds and seven assists.

Quincy Lawson was efficient from the floor once again, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He was lethal near the rim; he pulled down eight boards, had four blocks, and threw down a spectacular dunk early in the first half.

WC scored the game's first basket, a free throw by Quincy Bair, but would never tie or see the lead the rest of the way.

A 3-pointer from Parker, a lay-in by Eakles and an easy bucket by Lawson saw CSUSM take a 7-1 lead four minutes in.

The Griffins cut a nine-point deficit to four with 3:35 left, but CSUSM scored seven straight points out of a timeout to take an 11-point lead. Johnson hit two 3-pointers in the final 1:30, but a timely 3-pointer by Bair pulled WC within 38-29 at the break.

Parker had nine points and five assists in the opening stanza.

CSUSM opened the second half with an 11-2 run that saw the Cougars take a 49-31 advantage with 15:35 left.

Johnson's 3-pointer gave CSUSM its first 20-point lead just over two minutes later. WC would not get back within 16 the rest of the way.

Jacob Andersson handed CSUSM its biggest lead of the night, 77-49 with 1:55 left, by hitting a 3-pointer and following with a contested layup.

Next up for the Cougars is San Diego Christian (3-3). CSUSM and SDCC will play this Friday, December 20th at 5:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College.

CSUSM downed SDCC in the teams' first meeting this season in El Cajon on Dec. 4, 87-77.
