Cougars Advance to A.I.I. Championship Match

Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 2-seed Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team scored twice in the second half and eliminated No. 3-seed Georgia Gwinnett College, 2-1, in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference semifinals on Friday night at Grizzly Field.

CSUSM (10-5-1) moves on to face No. 1-seed Ashford for the A.I.I. Conference title on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. PST. Ashford, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, topped No. 4-seed Lindenwood-Belleville 7-1 in the opposite semifinal. The winner of CSUSM-AU will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA Opening Round.

The Cougars are seeking their fourth A.I.I. crown after winning the title in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Dani Porter opened the scoring in the first half, but GGC leveled the match late in the first half. Paulina Good gave the Cougars the lead for good in the 57th minute before Porter sealed the win with her second score 19 minutes later.

In the seventh minute, Courtney Kay found Porter at the top of the box. Porter turned her defender and cracked a shot inside the left post to make it 1-0.

Tied at the break, CSUSM did not take long to go back on top. After a scramble on the right side of the box, Ashley Graves laid a pass back to Good about 14 yards out. Good hit a low ball through traffic that tucked inside the far post.

In the 76th minute, Jacqueline Lara dribbled her defender inside the left edge of the area. She pulled the ball back and played a ball to Porter, who easily beat the keeper from a wide angle in front of goal.

GGC dropped to 14-4-1 on the year.
