Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 2-seed Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team was eliminated in the semifinals of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championships by No. 3-seed Georgia Gwinnett College, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Grizzly Soccer Field.
Rene Enang broke a scoreless stalemate in the 64
th minute before Essie Aburime made it 2-0 in the 79
th.
Dustin Scibilia answered a minute later to bring the Cougars within one, but CSUSM could not find the equalizer.
The Cougars drop to 10-5-2 overall and will await their fate for the NAIA tournament. CSUSM would have to receive an at-large bid by the tournament committee to qualify.
Host GGC moves on to face No. 1-seed Ashford, which beat No. 4-seed Lindenwood-Belleville, 6-1, in the first semifinal.
CSUSM created few opportunities on offense in the first half, but stayed afloat with stout defense by
Richie Kaiser and
Mason Grimes.
Eric Lopez's pressure on the GGC keeper forced a turnover just above the Grizzly box, but
Scott Rice's left-footed bender was blocked out of play.
Early in the second frame,
Alex Jaziri worked himself free outside the left edge of the box before getting tackled for a foul. Lopez hit a dipping ball to the back post off the restart, but the keeper punched it out of danger at the last moment. . Minutes later,
Angel Mora found space about 30 yards out and had a go, but the shot was just a foot high.
