No. 21 CSUSM Blanks Bethesda for Third Straight Victory

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 21 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team matched its longest winning streak of the season after taking down Bethesda, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.

The Cougars carried the entire match, using a first-half goal from Jacqueline Lara to set the tone before Courtney Kay put it out of reach with CSUSM's second in the 80th minute. CSUSM did not allow a shot or a corner kick in the contest.

CSUSM has won three straight matches and improves to 7-3-1 overall.

"I thought it was a game that we could have scored a few more goals. We generated lot of chances early on. Jacqueline got us started and we were finally able to get our second pretty late. We were happy to see the game through and get the result," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers.

The Cougars threatened from the start.

In the 14th minute, Paulina Good threaded a ball to Lara just beyond the half line. Lara cut back across her defender to her left foot and fired a low shot to the near post, but the keeper blocked it out for a corner.

Minutes later, Good once again linked up with Lara, this time playing a bouncing ball in the air to the wide-open forward at the top of the box. Lara took a touch and put the ball on her right side before launching a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

Sarah Campbell came on just before the break and threatened along the right side. She beat a couple of defenders on the touch line before playing a chip to Kaylea Bradley at the penalty spot. Bradley was all alone, but the ball was just out of reach.

It was much of the same for CSUSM in the second half, as the Cougars repeatedly entered the Flames' box with ease.

Amy Alber made her presence known, first playing a bending free-kick that made the goalkeeper uneasy before rocketing a shot off the goalie's palms from the right side. Alber was kept off the score sheet, but was a constant nuisance for the BUC back line.

Ashley Barber replaced Lara in the 63rd and nearly poked in a breakaway off a clever pass from Brianne Searl on her first play. Minutes later, Barber freed herself on the left side before firing a ball across the goal mouth. Kay got her head to it and deflected it into the right side-netting to put CSUSM up a pair.

The Cougars next match is a road test at Marymount College on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. at the StubHub Center.
