SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 23 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team honored its eight seniors with a 5-0 win over the University of Antelope Valley in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) play on Saturday afternoon at Mangrum Soccer Field.
CSUSM improved to 9-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in A.I.I. play while UAV dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
The Cougars pressed UAV from the get-go and were rewarded on their first dangerous opportunity in the fourth minute. The Pioneers played a poor clearance out of their own box, which Dani Porter volleyed forward over the back line. Ashley Graves ran onto it and fired a quick shot from the top of the box. Despite the keeper getting a hand to it, it trickled across the line for Graves' first goal of her CSUSM career.
CSUSM earned its first free kick in UAV's half in the 26th minute. Instead of crossing it into the box, Paulina Good played a short ball to Courtney Kay at the top of the arc. Kay took a touch and played a low shot that deflected off a defender and in.
Kaylea Bradley made it 3-0 moments after coming on in the 34th minute. Brianne Searl played a corner kick to the back of the six that Bradley rose to and headed off the crossbar and in. The score was Bradley's first of her four-year career.
In the second half, Searl got a goal of her own off a corner. She played a high in-swinger with her right foot that bent over the keeper's reach and into the side-netting of the far post for her first goal of the year.
Natalie Lara capped it off in the 60th minute, as her shot from 25 yards away took a wicked deflection that beat Alejandra Valdivia.
The Cougars set season highs with 35 shots, 19 shots on goal, 18 corner kicks and five goals.
UAV was limited to one shot on frame and one corner kick.
Bradley, Porter, Kaleigh Dodson, Jennifer Hager, Amanda Anderson, Jessica Wilds, Jacqueline Lara and Mary Green were the seniors acknowledged before the contest.
CSUSM will end the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Point Loma Nazarene at 1:00 p.m.
