Just In Time! Lara’s Golden Goal Lifts Cougars

Natalie Lara nets game-winner in 106th minute to hand CSUSM fourth win in last five matches

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. – Natalie Lara scored a golden goal just four minutes from the end of the second overtime to lift the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Fresno Pacific on Wednesday afternoon at Ramirez Field.

The Cougars out-shot FPU 24-11 and won the corner-kick battle 7-0, but were still without a goal due to a stingy Sunbird defense. However, Lara got herself into a scrum inside the box in the 106th minute before pounding home a shot from point-blank range.

The score marked Lara's second of the year and first since her game-winner in a 1-0 win over San Diego Christian on Sept. 17.

Amanda Sears made four saves in goal on her way to her seventh shutout of the season. Paulina Good led the Cougars in shots with four, while Brianne Searl, Amy Alber and Dani Porter helped pepper the FPU keeper with three apiece.

The 24 shots by CSUSM were the second-most in a single game this season, behind only the 26 against Whittier in the season opener on Aug. 31.

CSUSM (8-4-1) has won four of its last five matches heading into Saturday's home finale at noon against the University of Antelope Valley at Mangrum Soccer Field.

Eight Cougar seniors – Jessica Wilds, Kaylea Bradley, Mary Green, Dani Porter, Amanda Anderson, Jennifer Hager, Kaleigh Dodson and Jacqueline Lara – will be honored for their years of service to the women's soccer program in a special Senior Day ceremony 15 minutes prior to kickoff.
