If YOU SHOOT IT, GOALS WILL COME
CSUSM outshot its last two opponents Bethesda and Marymount by a combined total of 25-to-5, and held a 15-to-1 advantage in shots on goal. However, the Cougars walked away with just a 2-0 victory over the Flames and a 1-0 loss to the Mariners. While the dominance in the field of play is encouraging, it's certainly frustrating for the Cougars to not be able to put those chances away. Fortunately, if history is any indication, the goals will start coming again soon. Prior to the two-game stretch, the Cougars had scored 11 goals in their 48 shots on target, good for a 23% success rate. Overall, CSUSM has fired 63 balls on net this season, compared to just 30 for their opponents. There's no reason for Cougars to stop firing balls between the posts, so expect more goals to fall CSUSM's way this week.
POLL SITTERS
The Cougars were ranked No. 23 in this week's NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, marking the 45th consecutive week in which CSUSM has been included. The last time the Cougars weren't nationally ranked was in 2009.
FRESNO PACIFIC PREVIEW
The Sunbirds enter Tuesday's contest at 6-5-1 overall and are coming off a 2-1-1 stretch in Hawaii. Fresno Pacific made national news last week and were featured on Good Morning America when former FPU men's player Fabricio Nazare proposed to midfielder Sara Evans in an
elaborate on-field proposal with the help of the team and coaching staff. CSUSM is 3-1 lifetime against the Sunbirds, with the last meeting resulting in a 3-0 win on the road last September.
Dani Porter and
Paulina Good each picked up a goal for the Cougars, while
Amanda Sears made two saves for the shutout.
ANTELOPE VALLEY PREVIEW
The Pioneers have done surprisingly well in their first season as a program, currently holding a respectable 4-5 record after winning each of their last four games. However, Antelope Valley faces the daunting task of facing the Cougars at home— on senior day. CSUSM is 5-1-1 all-time on senior day, outscoring opponents 23-2 in the process. The Cougars will have eight seniors recognized Saturday before the game in recognition of their efforts during their time at CSUSM. These leaders are:
Jessica Wilds,
Kaylea Bradley,
Mary Green,
Dani Porter,
Amanda Anderson,
Jennifer Hager,
Kaleigh Dodson, and
Jacqueline Lara.
SHOOTIN' BLANKS
The Cougars have now been involved in a shutout in 11 consecutive matches. The last time both teams scored in the same game was CSUSM's season opener, a 3-2 double-overtime victory vs. Whittier.
CAR RAFFLE
The Cal State San Marcos Department of Athletics is hosting a 2014 MINI Cooper raffle to raise money for the Cougars' 13 intercollegiate teams. For $10, fans and friends of the program can enter to win a 2-year lease of the vehicle. For more information on how and where to buy tickets, click here.
