IT'S BEEN COMIN' FOUR YEARS
CSUSM registered a historic win for the program on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Seattle Pacific. SPU, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, has been to three final four appearances in the past eight years. CSUSM had not defeated an NCAA DII squad since defeating Cal Poly Pomona 3-1 on October 17, 2008. The Cougars are 4-6-6 all-time against NCAA DII teams.
FIRST OFF…
Sophomore defender
Amy Alber picked an opportune time to score her first career goal in Cougar blue. Alber's penalty kick in the 69
th minute provided the difference in CSUSM's 1-0 win over Holy Names last Friday. The spot-kick handed CSUSM its first win of the season. The following day, fellow sophomore defender
Brianne Searl netted her first goal of the season in the 56
th minute against SPU, the second of her career.
BEATIN' AROUND THE BUSH
Shelby Bush recorded a goal and an assist in the win over SPU on her way to garnering
CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Her 19 career goals rank second all-time behind
Lauren Johnson (2008-11) and her 44 total points are third most in Cougar history.
SUNBIRDS ON THE HORIZON
The Cougars are 2-1 all-time against Fresno Pacific, including last year's 1-0 road victory over the Sunbirds. Then-freshman
Courtney Kay scored the first goal of her career for the game's only score. The 2012 FPU squad enters Saturday's contest 0-1-1 on the season after a 2-1 overtime loss to Southern Oregon and a scoreless tie with NCAA Division I opponent CSU Bakersfield. Demi Hamilton led all Sunbird returners with six goals in 2011.
