SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 12 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team led 2-0 and 3-1 but succumbed to a second-half Biola comeback, as the Cougars and Eagles battled to a 3-3 tie on Tuesday at CSUSM Multipurpose Field.
Shelby Bush and
Sarah Hopper traded goals and assists early on, as Hopper found Bush for a one-time finish in the first minute before Hopper polished off a cross by Bush in the 10
th.
Biola substitute Jessica Austin cut the deficit in half in the 30
th, slotting home a breakaway on Katie Cabuling's long-ball over the top.
Dani Porter answered back for the Cougars less than 10 minutes later, volleying
Heather Flores' cross to make it 3-1 five minutes before halftime.
“I thought we played pretty well, with the exception of three defensive miscues. I thought we were more dangerous than they were, we had the better opportunities, but I think they had most of the possession. 3-3 is probably a fair result in the game,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers.
The Eagles took advantage of those missteps in the second half. Another long pass from the Biola back line got over the Cougar defense, straight into the path of Chrissy King, who calmly slotted a shot to the far post to make it 3-2.
Austin's speed proved lethal minutes later, as she created a one-on-one opportunity with CSUSM goalkeeper
Amanda Sears, but her chip sailed high and out of play. In the 77
th minute, the Eagles finally evened, as Stephanie Cubias scored from a sharp angle after Sears' clearance was blocked by a Biola midfielder.
CSUSM's
Paulina Good did her best to take advantage of the lack of daylight, firing a shot from 30 yards out in the 85
th. She struck it cleanly and Briana Williams had a difficult time collecting the ball due to the lack of visibility.
The Cougars move to 3-1-1 on the year while Biola sits at 2-2-1.
CSUSM travels to face Concordia (Calif.) on Thursday before returning home to play Westmont on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4:00 p.m.
