LUCKY NUMBER 13
The Cougars received their highest preseason ranking since 2009 last week when the NAIA coaches voted CSUSM No. 13. CSUSM was ranked as high as No. 7 last season and never dropped out of the NAIA poll.

WE'RE BAAAAAACK
CSUSM welcomes back 21 letterwinners and six starters from the 2011 A.I.I. title squad that set a school record for wins (15) and gave up just six goals the entire season. The Cougar attack will be paced by senior forward Shelby Bush, who's 10 goals a season ago matched Lauren Johnson's (2010) school record. Bush placed 53-percent of her team-high 59 shots on-frame a season in 2011 and led the team with five game-winning scores. Joining her in the attack is junior midfielder Kayleigh Dodson, who had two goals and an assist in 17 starts a year ago. Kelly Skvarna, who started just one match in 18 appearances, is back for her junior season after ranking third on the team with four goals a year ago. Anchoring the Cougar back line will be sophomore Nicole Luna, who took over the starting role in central defense late in the 2011 season, and Amy Alber, who started each of CSUSM 20 games a year ago.

BETTER HAVE BIG FEET, CUZ THERE'S SOME BIG SHOES TO FILL
The Cougars have much work to do in order to fill the void left by a number of starters from last year's team. CSUSM all-time leading scorer Lauren Johnson will be absent, in addition to five other players who started all 20 contests a year ago – Lauren Miszklevitz, Arielle Cohen, Shannon Cox, Kaycee Gunion and Chelsea Porter. The Cougars most noticeable omission will likely be the work of Gunion, a four-time NAIA All-American, who had been the CSUSM starter in goal in each of the past four seasons.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Head coach Ron Pulvers has stocked this year's team with valuable commodities by welcoming 19 newcomers to vie for playing time. Freshman Amanda Sears has looked strong while competing with Kimberly Mendenhall and Kristin Poggioli to replace Gunion between the pipes. Transfers Sarah Hopper and Katie Voss will support Bush on the Cougar front line, while freshman midfielder Paulina Good has been solid in a central role. The Cougars also expect a strong contribution from Morgan Crumpley and Natalie Lara in their first season in blue.

EARNING YOUR MASTER'S
Cal State San Marcos is 3-1-1 in its all-time series with The Master's College dating back to 2007. CSUSM topped TMC 1-0 during the teams' only meeting in 2011, as Erin Mulrooney found Arielle Cohen in the 57th minute for the game's lone score. TMC is 1-1-1 on the season; the Mustangs topped No. 16 Trinity Lutheran (2-0) to start the year before dropping a 2-1 contest to No. 2 Concordia (Ore.). Shea Richards leads all Mustangs with three goals on the season, including two in TMC's recent 2-2 tie with Southern Oregon (Aug. 25).
