The Cal State San Marcos Men's Basketball team finished off their incredible run as a first year program with a tough loss in the A.I.I. Conference Tournament Championship Game, losing 90-65 to Life University (GA) Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars, who played without injured post players AJ Chamberlain (15.0 pts, 7.7 rbs) and
Alpha Ndiaye (7.5 points, 6.9 rbs), had difficulty keeping pace with Life on the boards and were outrebounded 46-31 in a game that was close in every other way.
The Cougars trailed just 36-32 at halftime, but couldn't turn the game in their favor in the second half.
Point Guard Daniel Redmon had team highs of 20 points and 4 assists, and senior guard
Tim Steed added 16 points and 4 rebounds for San Marcos. Fellow senior
Jamel McGuire had 9 points and a team high 6 rebounds in his final game.
The Cougars finish the season at 19-12— a very successful debut for the program. The team twice knocked off the #2 ranked team in the NAIA, developed a talented core of athletes, and established an exceptionally strong foundation for the program to build on.
