MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Cal State San Marcos women's volleyball team won a pair of matches over La Sierra and Mayville State Friday in pool play of the 2012 A.I.I. Conference Championships, advancing to Saturday's semi-finals.
The defending champion Cougars are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, and will face No. 4 seed Ashford in tomorrow's match. With a victory, CSUSM would advance to the final against the winner of Jamestown and Mayville State match, and seal an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships for the second straight year.

In the third match of the day in the 2012 State Farm Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Volleyball Postseason Tournament, the top-seed Cal State San Marcos eliminated La Sierra (Calif.) from postseason play Friday afternoon at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. As a result, CSUSM and Mayville State (N.D.) advance to the semifinals on Saturday afternoon while La Sierra is eliminated from post-season play.
Cal State San Marcos improved their overall record to 25-13. La Sierra ended their season at 21-13 overall record.
The Cougars raced to a 20-9 lead in the first set and sealed the first-set victory by the score of 25-13. CSSM hit .467 in the set while La Sierra was held to a .100 hitting percentage.
Cal State San Marcos smashed a .593 hitting efficiency in the second set to extend their match lead to 2-0 (25-17 second set victory). La Sierra had a hitting percentage of .345.
La Sierra and CSSM battled back-and-forth with 13 ties and four lead changes in the third set. With La Sierra leading at 14-13, the Cougars closed the match with a 12-7 scoring run for a 25-21 third-set win.
Taylor DeGraaf produced 18 kills for the Cougars. Jaycee and
Andi Vordermann each added seven kills.
Alyssa Foster recorded 32 set assists. DeGraaf,
Nichole May and Brittany Esposito each had two service aces. Arthur had eight digs.
Erin Talafus recorded four block assists.
For La Sierra, Shelby Madigan had 11 kills. Lina Semaia added nine attacks. Colleen Stafford had 30 assists. Johanna Tope had eight digs.
Cal State San Marcos outhit La Sierra 39-33 in the match. The Cougars recorded a .354 hitting percentage compared to LSU's .163.
CSUSM had seven service aces while La Sierra had one service ace, and the Cougars recorded six blocks compared to La Sierra's two.

Cal State San Marcos pounded out 53 kills in a 3-0 victory over No. 5 seed Mayville State (N.D.) Friday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Cougars captured the Pool Play A with a No. 1 seed, while the Comets will be the Pool A No. 2 seed.
Cal State San Marcos, No. 19 in the latest NAIA Volleyball national poll, improved their overall record to 26-13. Mayville State dropped to 24-14.
Both teams battled offensively in the opening set. The Cougars recorded a .500 hitting percentage (18 kills with 4 errors in 28 attempts) to earn a 25-20 first-set victory. The Comets hit .370 killing efficiency with 14 kills in 27 attempts (4 errors).
The Cougars raced to a 12-3 lead in the second set. The Comets were able to get no closer than six points (22-16) as CSSM won the second set by the score of 25-17. The Cougars smashed 19 kills in the second set (.471 hitting percentage) compared to the Comets' .258 hitting efficiency (11 kills with three errors in 31 attempts).
Cal State San Marcos dominated the third set to secure the match by the score of 25-16. The Cougars outhit the Comets 16-10 in the third set.
Taylor DeGraaf recorded 18 kills for CSSM.
Jaycee Arthur added 14 kills.
Alyssa Foster produced 42 set assists.
Nichole May had 14 digs and four service aces. Arthur and
Andi Vordermann each had three block assists.
Josette Glatt led the Comets' offense with 12 attacks. Laura Kolness recorded 31 assists. Maggie Maroney had nine digs.
Cal State San Marcos produced a hitting percentage of .434 in the match compared to the Comets' .267. CSSM only recorded 10 attacks errors in 99 attempts while the Comets had 11 errors in 90 attempts.
The Cougars recorded eight service aces while Mayville State did not record a service ace in the match. CSSM had seven team blocks compared to the Comets zero.
