FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 20 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's late comeback bid fell short as the Cougars fell to Fresno Pacific 89-86 on Saturday night at the Special Events Center.
In head coach
Jim Saia's return to his former stomping grounds, the Cougars trailed all of 3:30 during the game and nearly rallied back from an 11-point deficit with 1:05 remaining.
Jacob Ranger and
Jose Rivera hit three pointers on consecutive possessions before the Cougars forced an FPU turnover with 31 seconds on the clock. CSUSM ran a set out of a timeout to get Ranger an open look from three, but his attempt hit the back of the rim.
After the Sunbirds made one of two free throws,
Danny Redmon hit a running three pointer to bring the Cougars within one with 3.1 seconds remaining. CSUSM fouled immediately and FPU's John Taylor made two free throws.
Adam Eakles inbounded to a running Redmon before the guard forced up a last gasp effort from half court. It missed to the left and the Sunbirds escaped with a three point victory.
Ali Langford led CSUSM with 21 points and six boards. Redmon pitched in with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Rivera added 14. He was 4-of-9 from three point land. All five CSUSM starters registered double digit point totals.
CSUSM (0-1) heads to Las Vegas next weekend to face No. 4 Robert Morris and Rocky Mountain on Friday (Nov. 9) and Saturday (Nov. 10), respectively.
