SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 20 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team had its winning streak snapped at five games after No. 13 Westminster (Utah) cruised to an 85-61 victory over the Cougars on Friday evening at the Westminster Thanksgiving Classic presented by Red Lion Downtown Salt Lake at Behnken Fieldhouse.
The Griffins scored the first six points, 12 of the first 16, and never trailed in the contest. CSUSM (5-2) edged within 18-7 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first stanza, but Westminster (6-1) used a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to build a 13-point lead and take a 45-29 advantage at the break.
A 24-8 run by Westminster early in the second half stretched the lead to 30 with 13 minutes left, but CSUSM was able to cut the final margin to 24.
Ali Langford led the way for the Cougars with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He added nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks.
Hakeem Washington and
Quincy Lawson were the only other CSUSM players to finish in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Griffins outscored the Cougars 50-38 in the paint and tallied 36 points off the bench, compared with 11 for CSUSM. Usually servicable from the three-point line, CSUSM was just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.
The Cougars are now 2-1 this season against NAIA Top 25 teams. CSUSM beat No. 4 Robert Morris and No. 13 Biola earlier in the year.
CSUSM wraps-up the Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday against Montana Tech at 4:00 p.m. Montana Tech defeated Chadron State 85-70 on Friday.
