11th-Ranked CSUSM Welcomes Marymount College, Ashford to Start Home Stand

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 11 Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team starts a seven-game home stand this week against Marymount College and Ashford (Iowa) at Mangrum Soccer Field.

SOCC-TOBER FEST
The Cougars will be at home for the rest of the regular season and the A.I.I. Tournament. After this week, CSUSM hosts Point Loma Nazarene (Oct. 17, 4:00 p.m.), UC Santa Cruz (Oct. 19, 4:00 p.m.), SOKA (Oct. 23, 3:00 p.m.), Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) (Oct. 27, 12:00 p.m.) and Bethesda (Oct. 30, 3:30 p.m.).

FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION GAME, OCT. 19
Calling all Cal State San Marcos faculty and staff! The Athletics Department would like to invite you and your families to the CSUSM Faculty/Staff Appreciation Game on Friday, Oct. 19. We know our faculty and staff work hard to make Cal State San Marcos the highly-touted institution it has grown to be. We'd like to show our gratitude by recognizing your hard work. The game is free of charge. Faculty and staff will be able to participate in half-time promotions and will be recognized during the contests.

WHERE WE AT?
The Cougars have run their unbeaten streak to four games since Sept. 18, the eighth-longest streak in team history and their longest since 2010. CSUSM downed No. 23 Westminster (Utah) 3-0 on Friday behind goals from Jacqueline Lara and Dani Porter, in addition to an own-goal by the Griffins. The next day, the Cougars tied No. 20 Carroll (Mont.) 0-0 in the NAIA Game of the Week, despite leading the Fighting Saints in all offensive categories.

ON THE 'MOUNT
Marymount College heads to San Marcos 1-0-1 in its last two games after a 6-0 win over Simpson (Calif.) and a scoreless draw with SOKA. The Mariners lost a span of six consecutive games after opening the season with a 2-0 victory over San Diego Christian College, before they beat Mills College 8-0 on Sept. 17. CSUSM is 1-1 all-time against Marymount, having lost the contest between the two squads, 1-0, in 2011. In 2010, the C0ugars won by a score of 4-0. Current Cougars Mary Green and Natalya Erbel scored in the game.

THE SAINTS COME MARCHING IN
Ashford (Iowa) enters Friday's match with the highest win-percentage in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) at .750. CSUSM is second at .700. The Saints have won their last two games against Bethel and Clarke (Iowa). The Cougars and Saints have never met. Hollie Babut leads Ashford with 16 goals in 12 games thus far. The Saints received 84 points in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, the most for any team that remains unranked.

NOTES
Porter's goal on Friday gave her the team-lead for scores on the year with four … Shelby Bush currently leads all players with nine points (three goals, three assists) … Lara's goal was the first of her career … CSUSM has outscored opponents 8-2 in the first half this season and is 6-0-1 when scoring first … CSUSM went 3-1-1 against ranked teams over its past five games … CSUSM dropped a spot in the NAIA Coaches Poll to No. 11, where the team was from Sept. 25 – Oct. 1.

A.I.I. TOURNAMENT COMING TO CSUSM
A year after the men's and women's soccer teams hoisted the A.I.I. championship banner, Cal State San Marcos will host this year's A.I.I. Championship Tournament November 9-10 at Mangrum Field and the Multipurpose Field. The six-game tournament will crown a men's and women's champion and hand two automatic NAIA tournament berths to the winners.
