SALT LAKE CITY – The 10
th-ranked Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team increased its winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 shutout of host No. 23 Westminster (Utah) Friday afternoon at Dumke Field.
All of the Cougars' consecutive victories have been against ranked opponents. CSUSM improves to 6-2-1 ahead of its NAIA Game of the Week tomorrow against No. 20 Carroll (Mont.) at 10:00 a.m.
The Cougars took the lead on an own goal in the 18
th minute and followed with goals from
Jacqueline Lara and
Dani Porter to put the game away.
Amanda Sears earned her third shutout of the year with four saves.
“I think we played reasonably well today. We weren't sharp in possession early on, but I thought we were dangerous every time we got into the final third. In key places we played well,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers.
The opening Cougar goal was created via a run by
Sarah Hopper along the right side. The sophomore from Hemet turned the corner around her defender before playing a ball to the back post. A Westminster defender attempted to clear it out, but instead deflected it into her own net.
Coming into the game, CSUSM was 5-0-1 when scoring first. The trend continued.
The Cougars earned their second goal of the afternoon six minutes later, as
Natalie Lara fired a shot from inside the area. The ball bounced off the keeper's hands straight down, and
Jacqueline Lara pounced on it to put it away.
“We call those 'want-to' goals. They're not real clean, but it's when we will the ball in,” said Pulvers.
Jacqueline Lara's goal was the first of her young CSUSM career. Her sister, Natalie, was credited with the assist.
In what has become a dependable duo this season for the Cougars,
Shelby Bush and Porter combined for the game's final tally in the 64
th minute. Bush collected the ball on the right flank, drove to the end-line, and played it back to the penalty spot. Porter one-timed the offering inside the near-post for her team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Bush and Porter have combined for seven of the 17 CSUSM goals in 2012.
Westminster drops to 9-3 on the season.
Tomorrow's NAIA Game of the Week will be shown
live.
