SAN MARCOS, Calif.— Cal State San Marcos cross country will host the 2012 Cougar Challenge on Saturday, October 20 at the Mangrum Track and Soccer Field. The women's 5-kilometer race kicks off the morning at 8am, while the men's 8-kilometer race follows at 8:45am.
The meet, which is intercollegiate but also open to the public, offers runners of all ages the opportunity to compete against the No. 1 ranked and three-time defending NAIA National Champion women's squad, who are coming off a stellar performance at the Santa Clara Invitational in which they knocked off 12 NCAA Division I opponents en route to an overall victory. The Cougar women have won 9 of their last 10 races, but will be tested Saturday by No. 16 Concordia.
The No. 4 ranked men's team has had quite a successful follow-up campaign to last season's NAIA runner-up finish. The Cougars have won two of their four races this season, and have been posting times even faster than last year's talented squad.
The course is flat and fast, so it's a good bet that many personal bests will fall on Saturday. Awards will take place after the conclusion of the men's race. To register for the race or for course maps, please see the Cougar Challenge Flyer.
