In the first CSUSM sporting event of 2012, the Cal State San Marcos Men's Basketball team picked up where they left off in 2011, winning their 5th straight game 51-46 in a low-scoring affair over Pomona-Pitzer. AJ Chamberlain posted game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds to record his 9th double-double in 17 games this season.

The Cougars jumped out to a big lead early, going up 11-2 before the Sagehens responded with an 11-0 run of their own to regain the lead. The game remained close throughout after that, with the Cougars holding a 28-27 halftime lead.

The game was tied 44-44 with 4:17 remaining, and the Cougars held just a two-point edge with 27 seconds to go. However, great defensive plays down the stretch secured the victory for San Marcos, as Alpha Ndiaye's block led to free throws for guard Tim Steed, who sank one of two, and had 11 points on the night. Pomona-Pitzer had one last chance to tie, but turned the ball over as Daniel Redmon ended up with the loose ball and made two free throws to put the game away.

CSUSM jumps up to 10-7 on the season, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 5-5. CSUSM plays at UC Merced on Thursday, January 5th, and their next home game is Saturday, January 21st against La Sierra.
