The Cal State San Marcos Men's Basketball team got off to a hot start Thursday night, but couldn't hold on in the second half against #16 Azusa Pacific, falling 88-73 in a high scoring affair between two very athletic teams.

The Cougars found the back of the net early and often, jumping out to a 15-7 lead just 6 ½ minutes into the game on a jumper from Jacob Ranger. Both teams battled close from that point forward, and CSUSM entered the half with a 36-33 advantage.

CSUSM continued to shoot the ball well in the second half, boasting a 54.5% field goal percentage on the night, but Azusa Pacific hit a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half to take the lead, nailing 9-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Danny Redmon had an excellent game for the Cougars, recording 16 points on 7-of -9 shooting, as well as 7 steals and 3 assists. Jamel McGuire also had 16 points for San Marcos, and Tim Steed added 12 points and a game-high 7 assists. Playing without starting forward AJ Chamberlain, a big presence down low, the Cougars struggled at times on the glass but Alpha Ndiaye had a team-high 5 rebounds for San Marcos.

The Cougars are now 13-10 on the season, and will look to avenge an overtime loss in December to Arizona Christian as they head east to Phoenix to play the Firestorm Saturday.
